Costco, Walmart, JCPenney and all the other chain retailers are some of the best places to shop for everything we need, including 200 packs of toilet paper rolls and those 12 packs of cereal. But out of them all — Kmart, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Meijer, Sam’s Club, Sears and Target included — which is the best?

The good folks at Consumer Reports asked 26,000 readers to rate their shopping experiences to determine what the nation’s top retailer is.

And the winner is… Costco! It was the only chain to earn an outstanding grade for the overall quality of its merchandise, both at its bricks-and-mortar stores and online.

The members’ only warehouse store also got above-average marks in all 10 product categories, including electronic entertainment, jewelry, and sporting goods. In addition, survey respondents loved Costco.com’s layout, product value and checkout process.

In fact, the only things people didn’t like about Costco were its in-store selection, lack of fitting rooms and long checkout lines. (Oddly, there was no grumbling about where exactly we’re all supposed to store 200 rolls of toilet paper or a dozen boxes of cereal.)

The most unpopular stores, in case you’re wondering, were Walmart and Kmart. Almost a quarter of Walmart shoppers who returned an item reported having problems doing it, and Kmart scored poorly for selection, service and checkout speed.
