Brownsville ISD Buses Face Checks After 2 Fires

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Dozens of school buses operated by a South Texas district face inspections after two vehicles had engine compartment-related fires.

The Brownsville Independent School District announced inspections begin Monday on four buses similar to vehicles recently damaged or destroyed. Nobody was hurt.

A driver Wednesday afternoon extinguished a fire on a bus carrying 30 Rivera High School students. The blaze was similar to an Oct. 4 fire that destroyed a bus carrying 29 Porter High School students.

District officials say the two buses were of similar make and model from the International Corp., part of Illinois-based Navastar. Company experts will also check about 100 other buses, of different makes and models, that it supplied to the district. Brownsville ISD operates more than 300 buses daily.

Navastar officials didn't immediately comment Friday.
