HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston officer has fatally shot a suspect who allegedly beat some neighbors and then refused to cooperate with police.

Police spokesman John Cannon says the shooting happened early Thursday.

Cannon says the incident began with a 911 call about a neighbor breaking into a home, assaulting a man and his two children for no apparent reason and then fleeing. The victims, who suffered minor injuries, identified the suspect.

Police say Officer J. Rosemon went to a nearby home to talk to the suspect, who refused to show what he held behind his back.

Police say Rosemon opened fire when the combative man approached in a threatening manner. The suspect died at a hospital. His name wasn’t immediately released.

The uninjured officer has been put on administrative duty.
