The actions of an off duty Amarillo police officer have earned him the department's Medal of Valor.

On January 14, 2016, Corporal Vaughn(first name unavailable) was traveling along the 1100 block of North Taylor when he came upon smoke coming from the a residence in the 1000 block of North Polk,

Cpl. Vaughn stopped to investigate and to assist.  Witnesses on the scene told Vaughn there was a disabled man living in the rear of the structure.

At the rear of the house Vaughn heard the man shouting for help.  A window was broken and Vaughn could see the victim on the floor, trying to get to the window.  Vaughn entered through the window and was able to get the man to safety.

Due to Vaughn's actions were directly responsible in saving the man's life he was recognized by the department and the city.
