An Amarillo teen has died after sustaining fatal head injuries after he was thrown from the top of a car he was riding on.

On Monday October 19th just past 9:30pm Amarillo police responded to a report of a vehicle vs pedestrian accident at 5601 Amarillo Boulevard West.

The accident had happened at Thompson Park.  Police learned that a teen was driving a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer in the 100 block of Horseshoe Lane with several passengers riding on the car, including 16-year old Johnny Jo Lozano, who was riding on the roof.

The driver applied the brakes and Lozano was thrown from the car and struck his head on the pavement.  He was initially transported towards the hospital but was met about halfway by an ambulance who took Lozano to the hospital.

An autopsy has been ordered and the incident is still being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad because the incident is considered a traffic fatality.

No charges have been filed and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident.
