City commissioners held a first reading and preliminarily approved a property tax increase in Amarillo.

The measure passed four to one.  The move will raise the property tax $.02 for every $100 of property value.

The revenue is needed to fund new officer hires at the Amarillo Police Department and high turnover positions a raise.

The tax increase is next set for a second reading next week and is expected to pass.
