Amarillo ISD Expanding To Serve Larger Student Population
Amarillo ISD is bulging at the seams and new construction is the only remedy.
In October the school board approved a multimillion dollar construction bid.
With the new housing developments popping up around the city, schools have been having to take in new students and there isn't always room.
Some schools have resorted to portable buildings and in at least one school, closets have been turned into small tutoring rooms.
The school district's current student population is 33,332. The all time high for Amarillo ISD was in 1968. With the Air Force base in Amarillo the student population then was 34,067.
The $11.7 million construction bid passed last month will add 38 classrooms to several schools in the district.
