6 Endangered Falcons Released On Mustang Island

"The Birds" Tribeca Drive-In Screening - 2013 Tribeca Film Festival

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Six endangered falcons have been released in South Texas in an effort to help save the species.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times (http://bit.ly/149TZT8 ) reports the young aplomado (ah-ploh-MAH’-doh) falcons on Tuesday settled in at Mustang Island.

Biologist Brian Mutch with The Peregrine Fund placed the month-old raptors into their nest on a hack site on the island near Corpus Christi. Mutch says the falcons are just about ready to fledge. The birds will be closely monitored as they learn to adapt to their environment.

The falcons were hatched at the fund’s World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho. Officials hope to place a total of 29 juvenile falcons on Mustang Island in coming weeks. More than a dozen aplomado falcons were also put on Mustang Island last summer.
